Making Memories: The Giver

Following Ken's interest in government and photography we decided that we will be reading The Giver by Lois Lowry.

Michelle and I had a great time together reading this the summer she was entering fourth grade. I am hoping Ken and I will have the same experience.
I'll be using this guide for some inspiration as we delve back into the world of government. Lots of great activity ideas. This is another book that allows you to connect subject areas. First up we will learn more about our community and compare it to the main character Jonas's community.
Here are just a few books I picked up at the library for resources for her.
Jonas the main character in the story has many "memories" that he can only see in the black and white. I thought this was a perfect lead into learning more about photography. Ken likes to explore things independently at first so I downloaded the Photography for Kids onto her Kindle. This is a great book that has a lot of tutorials that she will love to do with the camera.
I also set up this Photography Tray. The idea came directly from the blog Living Montessori Now. You can find the post  here, lots of information and links are included in the post.
This is a kit that she has been wanting to do for a long time. Ken is beyond excited to make her own camera!!
It came with everything but the film and illustrated directions.
Also a book was included that has tons of information about the history of cameras, and activities to do with your pinhole camera. There is so much fun to be had when learning about photography, I try to offer my kids just enough to get the creative juices going. I absolutely love to see their point of view on things and I think these activities will at least allow me a glimpse of Ken's take on things.
